The tenant may be located in the present, but it is difficult not to impose the horror of Polanski’s own childhood experiences in the Warsaw Ghetto on this story of the walls that close in the world of one man. Made in the same year as Psycho, another movie about a crazy single man, this was the movie that stopped Powell’s career, his contemporaries found the story of a young photographer and filmmaker who disguises a murder weapon as a camera to capture and kill women. In hindsight, Mark Lewis (Böhm) remains a terrifying figure, and his screen murders have intimate cruelty to them: Shearer’s disappearance in an empty film studio is particularly terrible. But it was certainly the most modern elements of the film, suggesting that the camera itself is so invasive and predatory that it “kills” and the idea that Lewis plays child trauma, which alienated viewers in the early 1960s and caused Powell. This is a great horror movie about the horror of the cinema itself. No conventional genre is as prone to unconvincing or uncertain endings as horror, and The Vanishingmight’s closing scene beats them all. If you consider yourself a real fan of everything to do with horror, you will appreciate everything the genre has to offer. Suspiria is not based on sudden volume peaks or shoe-horned “torsie” ends, or even really gruesome. Technicolor’s brilliant expressionist ensembles, smart sound mix and Goblin’s wonderfully terrible score create a nightmare world.
