In the context of the madness of satanic cinema in the late 1960s and 1970s, The Omenis is not entirely in line with The Exorcistor Rosemary’s Baby. Although the alleged anthropological images of the Cannibal Holocaust preceded the fake documentary by Myrick and Sánchez for almost two decades, this film made them the founders of the modern horror of ‘found images’.

Based on the writings of the Marquis de Sade and influenced by Dante’s hell, Pasolini imagined that four fascist libertines would capture a group of young men and women in a stately home in Italy and subject them to an unimaginable cycle of terror. Rape, torture, murder, forced feeding of shit, everything is here. The film caused outrage in many sectors, but now it seems every claim that it is pornographic seems ridiculous.

If you consider yourself a real fan of everything to do with horror, you will appreciate everything the genre has to offer. Suspiria is not based on sudden volume peaks or shoe-horned “torsie” ends, or even really gruesome. Technicolor’s brilliant expressionist ensembles, smart sound mix and Goblin’s wonderfully terrible score create a nightmare world.

But that is the premise of The Exorcist, one of the most profitable horror films of all time. From invisible Laird Cregar vehicles to a Russian cooler based on a Nikolai Gogol story, from J-Horror to the Mexican gem “Alucarda”, these are the best horror movies the genre has to offer. The casting was perfect and the horrors, not only of the clown himself, but also of the horrors of real life such as abuse, intimidation and racism, resonate in a way that should make everyone tremble. Part II, released in 2019, was not as strong as the first, but it still gives the story a satisfying ending.
